This is a difficult question. Are you asking about factory ammo or in the hands of an experienced reloader? If you're talking about modern factory loads then in terms of ballistics they are very similar (read nearly identical) but if you're talking about handloads then the 45 colt probably wins. This isn't because you can't overload a 45 but because strong revolvers like the ruger blackhawk combined with new commercial 45 colt brass can be loaded much hotter safely than a 45acp in an auto like a glock or 1911 could be.

45ACP: 230 gr 900 ft/s 414 ft·lbf

45 Colt is faster in the heavy weights, but in 200 gr 45 acp is marginally better.

If you and your gun can handle +P 45 colt than Buffalo Bore makes a beast.
325 gr Buffalo Bore heavy lead +P 1,325 ft/s 1,267 ft·lbf

ok which is more powerful ?

If you are comparing cowboy lead to 1911 acps. Then the ACP is more powerful.

45 Colt has more potential in the right firearm (ie. Ruger.) still, neither one can hold a flame to 44 Magnum. :D

Dad would hunt hogs with his .45LC Blackhawk... but I don't think he'd do it with a 1911.

I'd say either caliber is sufficient for most non-dangerous game on our continent. Just my opinion. Sometimes the "which caliber" threads make me want to say something like "well why don't we all just get something chambered in 20MM and be done with it"
