  1. Bee Keeping

There are several things that can wipe out a.hive. Harvest too late and too much and fhey can starve during the winter. Incecide and pests also take their toll. It's nature and things just happen.
  2. Bee Keeping

Hoping for a repeat since we didn't rob last year. Got 53# one year and 88# another year.
  3. Bee Keeping

Pics from a couple of seasons ago. Bees cleaning up the extractor and bottled honey. Each bottle was 1# in that picture.
  4. Bee Keeping

    DD, do you have bees?
  5. Bee Keeping

Biggest headache is all the mosquito insecticide they spray. Easy to loose a hive if they get into the wrong thing.
  6. Bee Keeping

Yes, can do 8 med frames at a time or 4 deeps. Also helps to have a cheap filet knife to remove the caps as it is a lot faster and easier than some other ways I have tried.
  7. Bee Keeping

We will be harvesting in a week or two. Hoping for a good honey harvest with losing 5 hives. Even with an extractor, you have to plan on spending most of the day playing in the honey. Last time, I asked the neighbors and his sons to help me since they had never seen how it was done and...
  8. Bee Keeping

We have had bees for 4 years now. A lot of ups and downs with loosing hives. On the pricey side to get started with everything; but it is rewarding when you harvest honey. For the most part, they are not aggressive unless you start mashing them. Surprising for an entire colony made up of...
  9. Best Ride on Lawn Mower

I have 3 acres to mow at the other house and used to have a Cub Cadet lawn tractor. After mowing for over 3 hours, I hurt all over and felt like I'd been bull riding. Once it finally died, I got a 48' Big Dawg (Hustler with upgrades) and I can mow same area in about 2 hours and still be ready...
  10. Anyone have honey bees

After some more good advise today and reasons why, I check found my 2nd brood chamber to be completely honey bound. Guessing I have about 60-70# of capped honey right now. Swapped around supers and they now have a med empty 8 frame to work with. Next change I get will be to go into the entire...
  11. Anyone have honey bees

After some good advise, I went out and swapped supers around and put honey on top and empty medium below. Founds 8 frames completely full of capped honey. Hoping this will hold them off for a few more days on swarming. Sorry no pics due to lighting and time.
  12. Anyone have honey bees

3rd year doing this and a lot of people lost hives this last winter. Maybe when I do the split, I'll try to get some pics for people interested. Most people have no idea how many bees are actually in a hive. I've got a good start; just want to split before they start to swarm. 2 deep...
  13. Anyone have honey bees

Lost 4 of my 5 hives last year. Getting ready to start making splits with the strong hive and wondering if anyone else was doing the same? Currently have frames in the freezer and replacement foundation if needed. Going for honey this year, so should be interesting.
  14. 3D PRINTING THREAD

Ok, found the printer at Micro Center. What filament do you need (and how much) and what else to get started. Pretend you are talking to someone with no knowledge of 3D printing except finished product.
  15. 3D PRINTING THREAD

How hard is it to find programs to run. Been thinking about one for a while and looks like pricing is finally reasonable.
  16. Advice needed - I harvested my first @ 2 gallons of honey today

Update on honey harvesting. Robbed bees today and got another 32lbs of honey from them. One hive has a full super with about half capped and rest of it still nectar. I've give it a week or so and go get the rest of it. So far we have gotten just over 88lbs from the girls this year. Wife is...
  17. Advice needed - I harvested my first @ 2 gallons of honey today

Don't worry, only first harvest will be done this way. Kinda like a dealer giving out free samples. Wife is ecstatic; so it was cheaper in the long run. Several friends offered to pay me; but we work on the barter system, so I'm not too worried about that. Extractor did 8 frames at once...
  18. Advice needed - I harvested my first @ 2 gallons of honey today

Not selling any of this harvest. Don't have labels and wife promised most of it to people before we got the first bottle.
  19. Advice needed - I harvested my first @ 2 gallons of honey today

I told my buddy that it is amazing that hives do so well since they are all females. Nice thing is that neither the wife or myself got stung today dealing with the girls. Looks like I might get another pound or so after dumping the capping strainer twice. Not a bad haul from one...
  20. Advice needed - I harvested my first @ 2 gallons of honey today

We have about decided that the flower flavor may be honeysuckle and gardenia. Bees are working on cleaning up equipment .
