  2. Cold weather function checks/ lubricants

So, what makes transmission fluid better than motor oils for this purpose? And the big question: Are there red spots on your clothes? I have been known to use reel oil, and on occasion light machine oil. I haven't noticed any ill effects, but tend to gravitate towards the rem-oil when I buy...
  3. Cold weather function checks/ lubricants

Be careful with unknown solvents. I've seen AR stocks and handgun grips messed up with either carb or brake cleaner. Try a bit on a cotton swab in a hidden spot before blasting away. I seem to remember a recent thread where a chemical engineer spoke on the topic of motor oils as gun lubes. I...
  4. Cold weather function checks/ lubricants

I'm old, so sometimes my memories blur, so I don't remember what class I was attending, or even if it was Army or Marines, but I do remember being told not to bring weapons inside the tent in freezing weather. They would get condensation, and freeze up when you went back outside. I also seem...
  5. The Arthritis Project

Tagged. I understand the arthritis issue.
  6. The Undecided Project

Have I ever said, "I hate you"? Just kidding. Wish I had the skills. But I do have the wood, and access to more. I've been saving a chunk of gaboon ebony for when I get the technique down.
  7. The Undecided Project

Too tied up on the pics to actually read anything. Do you use a sander/belt grinder, or take down the grips by hand with a strip? What grit do you start with, and how do you keep the meat on the frame without skinning it up?
  8. I lost the screws for my S&W 17-2. Say hello to an idiot

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_garage-workshop-supplies+magnets Or, buy a pkg of magnets at Lowe's, glue or tape them to a ruler, and slide it across the floor. You will be surprised what you find. We have become a disposable society. Instead of fixing what we have, we throw...
  9. I lost the screws for my S&W 17-2. Say hello to an idiot

I have a shop magnet. It's about a foot or more long on a stick. Works wonders. Home Depot / Lowes probably sells them. Comes in handy more often than you would think.
  10. Lubricant

I think I'm going to try the Marvel Mystery Oil/Hoppes #9 home brew to start. I have some lithium grease too.
  11. Lubricant

I know all the hype on high tech, high dollar lubricants, but my question is: 1. Who has used motor oil (either normal or synthetic) as a firearms lubricant? 2. Who has used automotive grease and what type on firearms? What did you use, and what were your experiences. (I have a quart of...
  12. AK ID

I think it was a fair trade; time will tell. It has given me an idea for a future project, if I like the way she shoots. As a post cleaning update, the black isn't Krylon, it didn't krinkle. Neither did the brown on the wood.
  13. AK ID

Seller said he shot it, but not enough to prove reliability. When we cleaned it, it looked to have quite a bit of wear and some heavy carbon deposits on the op-rod. I'll definitely be shooting it before taking a look at correcting any cosmetic issues. I won't risk shooting holes in the floor, so...
  14. AK ID

    Elaborate please!
  15. AK ID

    Ooops!
  16. My 1911

Missed opportunity. When those first got imported, they were cheap as all get out. Then, by the time everybody found out they were really good base guns, they banned their import.
  17. Sig 716 feeding problems

Congratulations on the new gun. Looks like you now have a winner.
  18. Sig 716 feeding problems

Write up and pictures don't match... Per the picture, did you try a different magazine, and a different brand of ammo? Per the statement Not familiar with the 716, but if it isn't extracting before the bolt comes forwards, and strips a new round into it, is it possibly: 1. a...

Will those things work if they used lock-tite?
