Who is running what and why? Looking to build a 5.56 pistol for keeping close around the house and going for car rides. No suppressor at the moment but it will eventually wear one. Not looking to shoot past 200 yards with it.

I have a 10.5. Not much difference between them. If you are going to suppress later I would go shorter like maybe 10.5, add suppressor and you are at 18 to 19 inches. Not much velocity is lost between 10.5 and 12.5.

The barrel length is a balancing act between downrange punch and manuverability. Short guns do well in tight spaces, long guns pickup reliability and thump. I'm not sure there is a one size fits all answer, it's more if a what do you want out of it. I love my 10.3 and the 11.5, each setup a little different, and have a 13.1~ in the building phase. Just my opinion, the short guns need weight in the form of quad rails or suppressors to increase usability and the long guns shed the weight for the same reason. Even side by side, youd be hard pressed to tell a difference in 1 inch of barrel length.

If you don't suppress it then store it with some hearing protection. If you don't use either then invest in some hearing aids. Those shorter barrels are loud to the point of being almost unusable without protection.
