12/22 Update: I need a GOOD boat mechanic.

is this the new boat you just bought?
Yes. It's a long story, but I got hooked up with the wrong mechanic to do some add ons and a couple of small repairs. He had it for two months and did very little with it. I finally went to his place a demanded it back. He talked me into letting him keep it one more day and he rushed most of the rest of the work he was supposed to be doing and did a poor job, but the main things I needed were done okay. Then I took it to a different place for detailing and a couple of the things that had not gotten done. It developed the problem with the motor while they had it. Hell of a coincidence, huh?

I've only had it on the water five times. The first was the test run when I bought it. Second was a test run when I got it back from the first mechanic. Third was "fishing", but the majority of the time was intentionally spent learning the electronics. Forth was after I had gotten it back from the second mechanic and was a fail (motor problem). Fifth was after I got is back from the mechanic again and was a fail (continuing motor problems).

It is an electrical problem. He has confirmed that when it starts running rough, the plugs are not firing properly. I believe he is a good mechanic, but he's trying too hard to save me money by working around the issue and I would have liked a lot better communication about what the issue is before today. I told him to stop screwing around and fix it. I'm not looking for work arounds, I want reliability.

Bear electronic problems are a nightmare, you doing right by replacing harness, you will only have problems with corrosion by quick fixes.good luck. things can be very frustrating at times.

I hope you get the bugs out, only 5 times on the water, stinks.
Oh... and the obligatory... When do you expect to lose all of your guns in "the" boating accident? :)

I’m not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but you mentioned learning the electronics which leads me to the following questions that I’m sure your mechanic has gone through already :
What are these electronics and are they new to the boat?
Are the electronics on a separate power source than the motor?
Is the motor electronic fuel injected? If so, are the jets getting consistent voltage?
Is the stator putting out the correct voltage?

Good luck, electrical issues are gremlins.

3 issues could be at play here. Running lean, Running Rich (both fuel issues as you suspect), or a weak spark. Eliminate the weak spark first, the other two if it wasn't weak spark. Luckily on small engines the spark problem should be simple enough to figure out, hope your guy comes through for you Bear.

Logic says this is NOT a new boat. Why would u be dickering with a new boat warranty, right.

Being an used boat...it's almost like u gotta unhitch all the work you did to it to truly figure out what is wrong.

I'm thinking the wiring harness isn't your problem. I would suggest you taking the boat back to the manufacturer and have them dial it in and figure it out
