OK, so I'm strange. I've got all sorts of high dollar equipment, and sometimes the stuff I really like is something down and dirty and el cheapo.

I picked up this old JC Higgins (High Standard) Model 20 12 GA at Franklin's cost sale for $119.99+ tax. It had a big wooden plug in the tube, and 28" worth of barrel, and felt sorta sticky.

So I took the old girl apart, and there was some 1958 edition yuck all inside of the action. A little toothbrush time and some solvent, and got her slicked up. Some sandpaper and tung oil on the wood, and good as new.

I got my trusty measuring tape and my pipe cutter and proceeded to shorten the old girl down to a more manageable 18.25", filed, sanded, rounded, and re-blued the end. Slapped an Allen elastic shell holder I had in a sock drawer on her and.. shazam. I've got a scattergun that will send 6 towards the bad guy in the same fashion as my fancy FN or Benelli.

Shown with the surplus length of barrel.

SO this got me thinking.. what do you think the ultimate in el-cheapo home defense is? There's many of us that may have a relative (or ourselves) that can't afford to shell out big bucks on a bad-guy stopper.

So hypothetically.. what is the best $150 solution for defending yourself?

I have a 28" mossy that I chopped down, and squirted with some krylon, and polished the bolt up good. For around $110 you can't beat it.

Just don't do what I did one time and try and turn a 10 ga. H&R Topper into an 18.25" with ports... omfg I wasn't right for a week after I touched off a round in that cannon.
