$150.00 Home Defense?

Ok I had to add while I know 00 and better bird shot will do a decent job here is a video of bird shot being tested

http://youtu.be/EA250yz2DR4

Until somebody can show me birdshot loads that consistently penetrate more than 5-6 inches tops in Ballistic gel and get much closer to the FBI's minimum 12 inch standard I will argue until the cows come home against the use of bird shot as a defensive load.

I will believe this irregardless of what el Destructo or whatever his name is says and demonstrates with wooden stakes on Youtube. Is he a firearms/ballistics expert or a guy with a Youtube channel?

No disrespect Lost Mountain, not knocking you personally.

idk.. what's six inches behind your breastbone? seems like some pretty critical stuff in there...

We are talking 5-6 inches in BARE ballistic gel. Remember that 12 inches is the min. FBI standard in gel.

Now in the the real world, the shot has got to bust through clothing, tissue, and then the breast bone. It then has to retain enough energy to continue on its path through the body cavity to reach and inflict mortal damage on the vitals.

I like this post. I am working on a project that has taken me a while now, mostly because of the info it has taken me to gather. I have a Mossberg 535 that I use for turkey hunting. It has a short forend unlike older Mossbergs. So I am having to order an adapter nut for the forend. Add to that the cost of a picatinny forend to replace the regular one and a tactical type stock that I want. It will be close to $150 just for the accessories. I plan on putting a light on it because the purpose of this gun is for home defense at night. Overkill? Maybe. More than I wanted to spend? Definitely!!!

For HD at night I wouldn't cannibalize your turkey gun... I'd look for a Mossberg 500 at a pawn shop, but the secret about 500's is..

They're not all called Mossberg!

If you find a Western Auto, Western Field, Revelation, New Haven, Montgomery Ward's, or Sears & Roebuck (JC Higgins) that looks like a Moss. 500.. it's because it is.

You can go to a pawn shop and find a Sears branded 500 next to a Mossberg 500 for usually 30% less. Same gun, will take all the same accessories, it was just a store brand.

I've bought a wheelbarrow full of nice store brand shotguns for less than $200 apiece.. for some reason they're not as valuable, usually due to folks not knowing what they are. I've picked up a couple really sweet Sears model 45 (Marlin 336) on the cheap over the years.

No hammers on mine, just one of those stupid auto safeties that I disabled a while back.

My first one didn't have hammers......... I had a friend in school that got shot with one with strikers and I couldn't get that out of my mind. That being said, I went to the a rabbiteared one, I like it much better.

Why not cannibalize the turkey gun? It just sits around for 10.5 months out of the year. Is there something inherently weak about the structure of the barrel? I read something about "overbored" barrels not being good for 00 buckshot. But my barrel is not overbored, whatever that means. Plus, my turkey barrel is only 21 inches long. That's only a smidge longer than the more desirable 18.5" barrels that HD shotguns come with.

I run a 20 inch on my 870 when it is not doing duty in the duck blind with a 28 inch on it. Off course I didn't get to hunt hardly any last season.............

I think you would be fine running your turkey gun for HD as long as you can run it with screw in chokes without some Xtra Super Dooper Full Turkey Choke screwed in it. I wouldn't go any tighter than an IC.
