This is on Paramount+ streaming (we're watching via AppleTV). It was developed as the origin story for Yellowstone. It's outstanding. Great cast, well written and acted, and beautiful cinematography. Well worth your time if you like westerns.

Wife and I watch 3 shows together. She yells during Tucker Carlson, Not at 1883 and Yellowstone. If he is a liberal, so be it. I enjoy the time with my wife. Great shows.

The show got a bit cringy in the mid-season, as it shifted gears to a coming-of-age story for Elsa (played by Isabelle May), and the woke set got their pound of flesh with a very unrealistic interracial marriage. So be it. The overall storytelling was tense and showcased the brutality of frontier life. Very high attrition rate in the wagon train, from natives, bandits, disease, drowning, rattlesnakes, etc.
Great as a standalone series, and even better as an origin tale for Yellowstone.
