I did something similar, I took a 2011 Commander full dust cover in 40 and had the chamber lengthened to 10mm. It has a steel frame for durability but the steel 2011 frames are light because the grip and trigger guard are all polymer.
If I were goin to build something I would want it to be worth as much as the parts when you are finished.
The 2011 frame is not going to be much more expensive than the 1911 but the completed gun will be worth much more if you do not cock it up.
