What does is a saddle ring used for? Or is it just that, a ring that helps the gun be held onto a saddle?

I assume this is what one looks like?

Cavalry used the rings to secure the carbine to a shoulder sling with rawhide or cord. May or may not have been used with a scabbard. Could also be used to secure the rifle to a saddlehorn.

Most often used to make sure soldier didn't lose the rifle while riding on patrol or battle. Similar to pistol lanyards used over the years.
