.308 Stockpilers....

I was just throwing that out there. Sorry for the thread drift. Not many guns out there chambered in the 7.62x54r. There are a few .308 rifles id LOVE to have. Id give my right leg for a HK g3.

If you dont mind me asking... what sort of .308 rifles do you own?

Ha ha...None. I'm looking at thinning the herd, purchasing the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, and making it my one, do it all centerfire rifle as part of my "4 Firearm Concept." To do that, I have to unload a few and it is going to require a shift from stockpiling 7.62x39, to stockpiling .308.

I certainly like the x54 round, but a MN doesn't really make a good do it all rifle, IMO.

That is one reason I could not get into the .308 round. I love the round. Just cant afford to shoot it. Dont have the time to reload. I just went with the 7.62x54. $79.99 for 440 rounds is tough to beat! I got spam cans of that stuff all over the place!

i remember back when i got 2 750 round cases on bandos for 289.99 a case shipped to my door...and that radway green was pretty good..... them days are long gone...... i miss 303 surplus as well........... sadder days are coming i am sure...

If you don't mind shooting corrosive and do a little digging you can find mil-surp .308 for decent, south african, portuguese, german, and others can be found for around $80 a battle pack. I have a few 200 battle packs of German hirtenberger that I picked up for $80 a piece back during the last election, don't have a .308 battle rifle, but in a pinch it can be run through my bolt actions. Has been very accurate out of a couple PTR 91s and FALs we have shot it in as well. If you are looking at commerical or match grade ammo then yes you are looking at around a dollar a round, for 147gr ball though you can get good prices if you shop around, just takes time and patience, and a bit of luck. If you are going full on .308 battle rifle though reloading would not be a bad idea at all though.

I hear ya. Ive rounded out my rifles as well. I did not have a longer range rifle. Most of mine are short to medium range rifles. Finally broke down and got a PSL. I have a moisin nagant sniper but it's a keepsake. Where I live long distance shots can not be had so I never felt the need to have one.

I do want an fn fal or a cetme though....one day!

I'm not so worried about long range shots as I am about energy. .308 just has sooo much more power than x39. You just have to pay significantly more for that power.

Ahhh quit your bellyaching and pony up. :greedy_dollars: I've been consolidating calibers for a while now and .308 is a good one. So many different platforms chambered for it and most of em plain and simple just kick ass. Everything from lightweight carbines to heavy rifles built for precision with action styles and operating mechanisms that vary from mild to wild. Ammo and components though a little more pricy than com bloc milsup, is readily available and not crazy expensive like the big magnums.
Heck you can take a .308 bolt gun to the range, take your time and relax and spend hours with a box of 20 rounds precisely placing shots into a 10 ring a long ways off and have hours of fun. Or you can spend the same money on 2 mags of 7.62x39 and will probably blow through it in a few minutes. Your gonna be somewhere on the paper and you might even hit the 10 ring if you have a little luck and you're close enough. Of course with the .308 semis you can still blow through ammo and send fuddy duddys:wink: backing away from the firing line while giving dirty looks:wink:, but now you're doing it with authority.
.223 is another good choice for many of the same reasons just without the whump
Come on in the waters fine.

its not a $1 a rnd everywhere..............you can routinely buy it from individuals or online for .50 a rnd or less shipped if you put in the search work

cost, it's also what's keeping me away. and the fact that there's not a whole lotta guns that I want in that caliber. however here is 1 I desire but can't have:

I generally stick to calibers that average 30 cents or less per round.
