308 vs 7.62x51

I was wanting to use my Norinco M1A to hunt deer this year should I use 308 7.62x51 i have known 308 and other people using it and not have any problems but i dont know what i should use just want to get yalls opinion on it

.308 is just loaded to slightly higher pressure. It’s like the 5.56 vs .223 thing.

so there should be no head spacing issues and it is safe to shoot?

Commercial .308 Win made for bolt guns often has a faster pressure curve, meaning it reaches peak pressure sooner.
It can break your rifle’s operating rod.
Mine broke while shooting 7.62 mm, but I had fired maybe 60 commercial .308 rounds out of that gun in the year prior.

I still will use some commercial .308 for hunting, but I don’t get any premium extra-performance rounds.

Those are chambered for 308. So really either or you will be safe. I shoot it all the time in my polytech M14

It's like that in that it's just the opposite : .308 is loaded higher than 7.62x51 but 5.56x45 is loaded higher than .223 Remington.

Springfield Armory M1A owner's manual says - "The M1A is designed and built to specifications to shoot standard factory .308 made to SAAMI specifications or 7.62x51 NATO ammunition."
