Recently I bought a box of old reloading stuff and some ammunition. It had a bunch of old .22 Ammo in unusual boxes I’ve never seen before, must be ancient. I’ve never seen .357 Remington Max or heard of it, it’s talker than .357 mag. I have never heard of it or seen a gun that shoots it. There was also .38 short colt and .38 automatic Colt. I still can’t believe I’ve never heard of this annunciation. Does anyone shoot this stuff and what do I do with it?? What is case-less .22 Ammo???? I know what to do with the .22 Ammo!!! Pew Pew Pew....

.357 Remington Maximum is a long .357 Magnum, usually seen in TC Contenders and the like.

.38 Colt Automatic is the anemic predecessor to the .38 Super.

Why the little .38 short Colt? I guess none of these calibers ever became popular because of better choices?

357 Max was also available in Ruger Blackhawks for a short period of time. They dropped it due to flame cutting the top strap.

It’s a hoss.

So it was so hot it would eventually destroy the barrel? I now know why I’ve never seen or shot one!

No, the top strap in the horizontal part of the frame above the cylinder. The part of the frame that the rear sight is attached too.

When the bullet makes the jump from cylinder to barrel, there is “flame” that comes out behind it in a circle; burning powder. In the .357 Max, this flame would start to cut into the metal of the top strap.

.357 Maximum was first loaded with a 110 grain bullet designed for metical silhouette shooting. It was loaded too hot and was flame cutting the top strap. The round works fine in signal shot pistols and break action like a Thompson Contender. The .38 short colt is used by a lot of USPSA revolver shooters. It works well in the 8 shot S&W revolvers that use moon clips. Runs fine in most .357 guns.
