.357SIG: What’s the point of this cartridge?

It's a cool looking cartridge and the fireball makes me smile?

At the MAG-40 I took years back, Massad Ayoob said that he felt the 357 SIG was similar to the 357 Magnum in 'one shot stops', but he couldn't pin down why that was. The idea about the huge muzzle flash on the 357 Magnum (and SIG) being part of a psychological factor does makes some sense here though. Unlike the 357 Mag in a shorter (<6") barrel, it does get a good bump over 9mm for ft/lbs though.

I have a old G22 with a LWD barrel I use for GSSF shoots in 357 SIG, just because it's a fun caliber to shoot and it's very flat at those distances.

The problem was getting a 357 magnum proven track record in a hi-cap semi auto. The answer from SIG was a 125 grain doing over 1400 fps. I think they got to the point. Not everyone likes the solution for a requested problem. Like the problem with 10mm. They asked for power then wussed out. Im glad they asked, it gave us a great round. 10mm is an awesome hunting / backup pistol. People didnt miss electricity till it was invented they had fire. People walk or rode horses before the car. If it wasnt for people working on stuff we didnt need we wouldnt have progress.

Maybe it came across partially wrong but just because you shoot something faster just how much faster is needed to sacrifice power? You state that you are really fast with 357 and I have no reason to doubt that. You also say youre faster with 9mm. I'd even bet you are faster with 380. IMHO shoot the largest caliber you shoot well. Just because this year happens to be 9mms flavor of the day does not mean its the best. If size doesnt matter why isnt Glock and SIG pooping out hicap 25 +32 acp pistols. If power is irrelevant why not us a 9mm bodyguard as a bear gun and not a 460sw? Whats nice is we have a lot of choices reguardless of what is and isnt "the best"

This is a stupid argument. If you're going to use that nonsense why aren't you carrying a .500 sw mag? SMFH

Thats a stupid statement.

1. Its not easy to conceal (2)
2. its not in a reliable semi auto hi cap pistol the size of a Glock 23 or smaller.
3. Im to frail to draw and shoot a 500 magnum in a double tap and hold a group in 2 seconds. (self imposed limit) If you are capable of this then you should carry one. Carry the largest gun you can control doesnt mean 9mm is it for every one. Perhaps 25acp and shot placement is for you since size doesnt matter.
4. If I were the size of Hulk Hogan Id carry the 460. Better all around cartridge IMHO.
5. Great troll.

I bought my G32 because I think it makes a good woods gun, when I may come across south Ga hogs, as well as a good SD carry caliber. Its a multi tasker. It also fits all my G19 holsters. I'm planning to get some good hard cast projectiles to keep on hand for blasting a pork critter...Or maybe even a deer.

I had considered, and still am considering a 1911 in 10mm for the woods, because I don't care for the bigger frame 10mm that Glock offers. Capacity and caliber are nice, but I don't like the thick Glock frames.

I want one of these after fondling at the NRA convention last year...

I would prolly own one now if they didn't come with the rail...railed 1911's aren't for me.

I don’t use .380 because it doesn’t meet my personal, minimum criteria for a self-defense cartridge. In addition, the .380 has the exact same diameter as the 9mm, so there is not a gain in capacity. In fact, the vast majority of .380’s are single-stack and would be a serious capacity loss to the 9mm and .357SIG handguns I carry. Also, your statement that .380 has less recoil is false in most cases. Most .380’s are blowback operated and have a snappy, sharp recoil that isn’t conducive to quick follow-up shots in those lightweight, compact platforms.

The 9mm and .357SIG are so close in modern performance that the loss of capacity, added recoil, and wear and tear on the firearm negates the negligible performance increase of the .357SIG. However, if you perceive that the .357SIG gives you an advantage, then that added confidence is an actual advantage. Press on.
