.357SIG: What’s the point of this cartridge?

For me it mostly comes down to foot pounds in energy, and, 357 Sig shines in this category. I have also seen where the .357 SIG does a great job of using up most of its energy inside the intended target, with very little over penetration. I'm talking about real tissue with bone, not ballistic gelatin.

It also averages somewhere around 1,400 fps, and has approx 4" of drop at 100 yards. Pretty good.

I believe .357 SIG is the round the FBI intended to come up with after they canned the 9mm. They ended up going with .40, before .357 came along a couple years later.

It may have been the 10mm, which had too much recoil for the FBI. I have a 10mm and it is a beast. I would rather have it over a 357 sig

Good read with excellent evidence to back it up.

Interesting article... I accept the research, but it is difficult for me to understand why the extra velocity and energy from the 357 Sig does not create any greater effectiveness.

Also it’s a bit disengeniius to contrast the cons between the 357 Sig and standard pressure 9mm loads, recoil, muzzle flash, reduced service life of pistol, price etc. But then compare the performance of the 357 Sig to +p 9mm rounds. When you bump up to +P 9mm loads you diminish some or all of the cost savings over the 357 Sig, and you add to the recoil, flash, and abuse to your handgun.

At +P+ 9mm levels, the 357 Sig still delivers more energy and velocity, and just to me when shooting both, it seems to me the 357 Sig delivers that increased velocity with lower recoil. and abuse compared to the +P+ 9mm loads... it seems that way to me - probably because the 357 Sig gun has a stronger recoil spring. And that +P+ ammo gets real expensive real fast and I’m not sure my 9mm guns are made to digest large quantities of +P+.

Either way,,, this is very interesting and has me considering getting out of the 357 Sig game,

I'm with you. I subscribe to Newton's law. I understand that 9mm is finally a valid defensive round due to the advances in bullet design. But that just doesn't simply invalidate Physics.

I was actually looking at going back to the 357 sig, Loved the ones I had before 2008 and went to the "infamous" .40. Like mentioned above the recoil wasn't that much more noticeable than +p if at all. The main reason why I carry a 9mm now is that I might need some in a pinch during an emergency it will be easier to find.
