.357SIG: What’s the point of this cartridge?

know another way to get a 357 magnum in a semi auto format thats easy to carry? I think 45 people ask this about 9mm and 9mm ask this about 45. Everyone asks this about 40 but it doesnt change the facts that a 357 and 40 both beat 45 and 9mm in almost every way. So my question is whats the point of 45 and other than capacity if you plan to miss like SW stormtroopers, whats the point of 9mm. I guess if you are kinda frail its nice to shoot.

You don’t have to be frail to run a 9mm faster than a .357SIG. I ain’t frail and I guarantee no one here has more rounds of .357SIG down range than I do. I can run a 9mm faster than a .357SIG.

I can run a 357 sig better than a 44 mag but im not slinging 15 rounds at ludicrous speed. I can also drop full mag of 22 a buttload faster than 9mm yet I dont carry it. Just how fast is considered acceptable and just how fast isnt? From what little research i have, hits matter not speed. If I shoot both well then I want what I hit with to have a better chance to do what its supposed to do. 9mm is not and never will be as strong and most never will always hit their point of aim in a SHTF scenario. Shot placement in a firefight is 20% likely to hit if statics are to be believed. So if im slightly off target I want more power and or a bigger bullet. Hope for the best prepare for the worst.

I ain’t arguing or disagreeing with any of that. You mentioned 9mm is nice to shoot if one is frail. I was saying that I am not frail and it’s still nice to shoot.

Everyone here is going to draw their own conclusions. If I can hit the bad guy with 5 rounds of 124grn 9mm in the same amount of time that I can hit the same person with 3 rounds of 125grn .357SIG, I’m way ahead in the rounds and weight on target, AT THE SAME ACCURACY.

I can run a .357SIG faster and more accurate than the vast majority of folks run a 9mm. Got my Triple Nickel with a stock P229 in .357SIGc and that course is faaaaaast......

Maybe it came across partially wrong but just because you shoot something faster just how much faster is needed to sacrifice power? You state that you are really fast with 357 and I have no reason to doubt that. You also say youre faster with 9mm. I'd even bet you are faster with 380. IMHO shoot the largest caliber you shoot well. Just because this year happens to be 9mms flavor of the day does not mean its the best. If size doesnt matter why isnt Glock and SIG pooping out hicap 25 +32 acp pistols. If power is irrelevant why not us a 9mm bodyguard as a bear gun and not a 460sw? Whats nice is we have a lot of choices reguardless of what is and isnt "the best"

One thought one the discussion; I've often heard that a bottleneck cartridge has a slight edge in feeding reliability, a possibly consideration when it comes to personal defense ?

Never had a 357sig, but I'd like to, I think it has a lot of positive attributes.

Im surprised at the lack of innovation. Seems people want new and better but when it comes along they dump on it. How old is the 45 and 9mm. People still shoot the 1911 but drive 2018 hondas. Id like to see bottle necked ammo become mainstream. Other than reloading I see no disadvantages and only advantages.

The original chambering for the Luger was a 30 cal bottleneck ;)

My general feeling has always been any caliber/firearm combo that shoots a big fireball out the muzzle isn't doing it's job very efficiently.

In all fairness, most 1911's being used today are modern. Still an old design and round, but still good.

I would like to see bottlenecks become more popular too. I always wanted to see 5.7 catch on and hopefully become cheaper just because I think its cool. Not surprising, it is also a good long range pistol round.

When I speed up on 9mm my shots spread out, so to shoot it halfway accurately it feels about the same in terms of speed when compared to .357. I will have to put this to the test to see what differences, if any, are worth noting.
