.40, why/why not?

i think alot are switching back because the stopping power of the .40 is simply not superior to that of a 9mm. they both seem to do the same job both equally well
The facts and nothing but,
Round Bullet type & weight Velocity Muzzle Ft Lbs. energy (hitting power/stopping force)
Mzl 50yds 100 yds
9mm Luger 147 Jacketed Hollow Point 1010 333 302 277
40 Smith & Wesson 155 Jacketed Hollow Point 1205 500 414 357
Directly from Ballistics table

yes

but in the real world they both seem to equal just as dead, with modern ammo the .40 doesnt offer anything over 9mm really

if we were going by just these kind of facts id still be wondering why all our vehicles MPG is lower than what is gathered from sterile tests

i hate it

to me .40 and .380 are just snappy for some reason. i can shoot and control them but they arent smooth or fun for me.

some folks love .40 cal though. pick up a decent 9mm and see which one you shoot better with

It's funny because I remember when 40S&W first made the scene around 1990. It was all the rage and everyone was going to it including the FBI. But I came up shooting 357\38 Special and was taught to shoot by a Vietnam Vet that didn't even like 9mm. " Why shoot half as much bullet?" I'll never forget that statement. Now that being said I've tried to stick with 9 mm and 45 ACP over the years. I never avoided 40 due to resaale or trade value reasons. But to me it seemed like a fad that would die out. But I thought the same thing about 357 Sig too.. But now a few of you have made a very good point about ammo availability. I didn't do much ammo hunting during the panic because I don't shoot much and had enough at the time. But being able to find it on the shelves goes a LONG way with me. So I may have to rethink my anti 40 mindset. Maybe get me a Hi Point or a Taurus 40 to stash in the big length of PVC pipe over in the... Wait I've said too much.

I keep hearing how with the proper ammo 9mm is as good as .40 with ify ammo.
Well wouldn't make food sense to assume that with the good bullets, .40 would enjoy the same improvements?
Exact bullets with the proper loads means more energy transfer. Question really is how much is enough for someone to feel comfortable. Me I always assume that while running ducking and screaming like a butch my"shot placement" might just be off somewhat and I want a hit to matter as much as possible. I balance that with capacity (remember what I said about running ducking and screaming) as I might need a second, or Tenth shot.

Don't forget you got the People that have the CHS (Can't Hit S***) syndrome, and need all the Spray and Pray capacity as possible.
