.40, why/why not?

I used the P229 .357SIG to earn my Triple Nickel......I'm coin holder #58. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_Nickel_Course_of_Fire Y'all try that course of fire and let me know how many of y'all can pass it. Shot with a covering garment and you have to pass it 3x in the same day to get your Nickel.

That's an interesting course of fire for sure.

Sadly, I would never be able to earn a nickel, as the nickel is only available to military or police. And we all know how important it is for a COP to be able to draw from concealment and shoot five people in less than five seconds. It's clearly not as important for a normal guy.

Please don't misunderstand me; I think this is an impressive feat. But I find the exclusiveness of it unsettling.

It is exclusive because the course of fire was developed by Federal Air Marshals, for Federal Air Marshals. If you know anything about what we do, then drawing from concealment to engage 5+ bad guys is well within the realm of possibilities.

It's exclusive because it's our club and ya gotta pay-to-play. Just like you can start your own club, with your own rules, and exclude LEO's and military personnel if you wish.

The fact that civilians aren't eligible for the 555 doesn't mean that the skills sets contained therein are not important to them......they certainly are. It ain't about having a coin in your pocket, it's about being able to perform the task upon demand.

just like T.L.G.'s FASTest the description of the course of fire is very detailed so anyone can set it up & practice it. The F.A.S.T test that we've discussed here before is a great training drill that only uses 6 rounds but covers several elements necessary for a skilled defensive shooter.

It is one of my favorite drills to practice. By looking at benchmark times one an set your personal goals to improve your skillsets to higher levels.

I suppose that makes sense as far as why the challenge was developed.

I wonder if I could start a club and exclude the people that pay for my membership and training? Also known as have someone else pay for me to play? Isn't that kind of what's going on with your "club"?

If you can't tell, the "LEO / military only" sticks in my craw a little.

Please dont take any of this the wrong way. I do enjoy reading your take on things, and one day may try to take a class when .schedule and budget allows. I hope there's no hard feelings.

No hard feelings, it's just life running the way life typically runs. I've found it's rarely "fair" to everyone.

You ever wanna get together, I'd be happy to set the course up and run it for you.

You don't pay for the Triple Nickel. The course is not officially sanctioned by the FAMS. The coins and other frippery are paid for by donations from Triple Nickel holders. We fund the entire thing out of our own pockets, so your tax dollars are safe......at least in this instance!

I get quite a few .40 shooters who are frustrated by their lack of accuracy with it.... especially when shooting under stress &/ or one-handed.

As "cmshoot" suggested shooters from beginner to advanced all usually shoot a 9mm much better than the .40.

I heard qualification scores go up with the depts. that go from .40 to 9mm.

Because I reload for the 10mm & like keeping it simple. A steel framed 40 shoots just fine to me, I use a S&W 4006 as a daily carry.
