9mm carbines and the like

Keltec has a SUB2000 folding carbine that retails for $410.00. You can often find a used one on here for $550 - $600. The fact that they fold makes the sights and stock look goofy, but the one I have has been reliable. They take different magazines depending on which version you get - either S&W, Beretta or Glock mags.

how does it shoot? Ive been interested in this one but the folding seems to open to some problems.

CMMG makes a complete 9mm rifle called the M4A3. It's more then some of the other options ($975ish) but I thought I'd throw it out there for you. They also sell the lower and upper by the peice if your budget building.

keltec makes a good one, although i wouldnt pay more than 400 bucks for one (thats what they are worth, people ask 500 plus because they are "scarce")

honestly carbines to me just arent very practical. fun and all, but i wouldnt drop more than 400 bucks or so on a gun that doesnt really have a best use

TNW Aero if you can find one (good luck), takes Glock mags and break down is easy so they say, also is the same size as Sub 2000 when you disassembled.
