Yep, you'll just be removing a layer on top of the original finish. Try it with a Q-Tip in a small place. You'll see.

In all seriousness, I think it's a thin lacquer or shellac someone applied. It'll come right off with Acetone.

Be sure to use outside, or in a well ventilated area. And eye protection, maybe nitrile gloves, also.
