My Great Uncle Ben served in WWII in the pacific. Rumor has it he was with Merrill's Marauders, but still trying to confirm. At any rate, my Dad has been wanting an M1 carbine like the one that he is holding in these pics, but M1s around friggin expensive. I am looking for a christmas present for him, so thought the gun in the holster might be a contender, but I have no idea what it is. Appears to be a revolver:

Question #1, what is it
Question #2, any around that are cheaper than an originalM1 carbine?

Hard to tell but bu the size of the grip and shape I'd say it's a Model 1917 in .45 acp. Could be a Colt or a S&W. I see them occasionally on Gunbroker for $650 and an Inland carbine might run $750-$800.

Depending on the condition you'd accept, a decent revolver is going to be close, price wise, to one of the common carbines.

Thank you all for the information, alot of knowledge here on odt.

For clarification, Uncle Ben was in Merrills Marauders, but my Dad was 23 years army EOD.
