A serious question

I used the "ask a question" method yesterday and very soon one of the mods "joined" me in making sure that misleading information was - illuminated. I'm not worried about getting misled myself, I just hate to see fellow gun folks walk down a crooked path...

just wish someone had helped that guy before he paid 500 for that gun, if he did.

It's a tough call Bear. I hate to get in anyone's business but I also hate to see anyone fooled into buying something that "ain't". You and I have traded and we both know that we're each honorable men - some folks are different...

What about misleading $$$ info for newbs? We all joke about the $700 Glock, but I asked another member some questions awhile back about another very common gun that he'd posted for sale.

In his ad he stated that the "like new" gun with one extra mag would cost (if memory serves correctly) $360+tax new and he was asking $325. Since he didn't post any pics, I asked if the gun had the threaded barrel (based on the price he was asking). He said "no". I told him through PM that I thought the way he posted his ad was deceptive because I could buy that exact gun for $280 NEW and get the extra mag for $25 NEW. Totaling less than the $325 he was asking for his USED gun and extra mag.

Needless to say, because he overstated the value of his gun, some unknowing newb paid way too much for that very common, very inexpensive gun.

But based on the rules of the forum, I couldn't post the info about his overpriced gun in the open thread.

It's unfortunate that some people will pay too much for a gun to begin with, then deceive other members into paying for their mistake. I believe we should very prominently post resources for newbs to check into the real value of the guns they're looking to buy/sell so that nobody feels like they got ripped off...

*************

One thing I've done in the past, though, is post info about sale ads when I see an overpriced gun here. The gun stated above was a Sig Mosquito. When the guy PM'd me back and basically told me to MYOB, I posted a new thread with info from my local gun shop and clearly stated in the headline that you could buy a NEW Sig Mosquito through them for $280.

I know that may seem back-handed, but I'd rather cost a seller his sale than let an uneducated buyer overpay for a gun, and at least this way I didn't bash the guy in his own thread. In fact, I made no reference to his thread or price at all. I simply offered the potential buyers a more affordable (and honest) option. This is a hobby we all enjoy. If one person overpays for their gun, then we as a community have failed them.
