A Tale of Two Crush Washers, or Two Crush Washers One Barrel, and other AR oddities

AR platform?
Some ARs and some bolt guns. I’ve got a barreled action from LRI with one of their muzzle brakes that’s cerakoted that I was going to put a can on but also it’s short (18”) and in an MDT chassis and I don’t think I can get the can to fit with the current chassis so I may be at a standstill with that.

Cheaply-built AR’s suck, and polymer center-fired AR’s aren’t even on the spectrum.

Brand new ATI Omni. First round fired resulted in a failure to eject, which is very uncommon as AR malfunctions go.

The shooter and another cleared it, reloaded, and fired again. Same issue.

I stepped in and looked at it. I found that the bolt was installed 180 degrees the wrong way ‘round, which should be impossible. Disassembled the BCG, and found that the cam pin hole in the bolt wasn’t peened on the “backside” to prevent this sort of disassembly.

I had a Noveske bolt like that… it came as the “matched bolt” with a barrel I ordered.

It had that issue and, luckily, it had an additional feature. It was too far out of spec to fit in any bolt carrier… including theirs. They were surprised when I sent it back but they didn’t offer neither argument nor excuse.

That's the new ambidextrous bolt I read about... :)

Can't get a good picture of this one, but had a White Label Armory barrel where the gas port was not drilled all the way through. Not a problem, I'll just drill it undersize, then ream to the proper 0625".

Turns out that when they were boring the port, they snapped a drill bit off in it, called it good enough, and shipped it out. That's a different sort of problem.

Before assembly, check your gas ports. This is the second barrel I've found, from 2 different manufacturers, that had gas ports that weren't bored all the way through. Additionally, improperly sized gas ports aren't that uncommon nowadays. Easier to gauge the gas port BEFORE you've built a complete upper around it.

Customer had an FN AR that he has been shooting for years with no issues. Changed the pistol grip for a BCM version, and now the safety is difficult to manipulate.

The new BCM pistol grip screw that came with his new grip is a bit too long. When tightened, it went far enough into the lower receiver to push against the barrel of the safety.

I replaced the grip screw with one of the proper length, and the problem was solved.

Correct length BCM grip screw on the left, too long version on the right.

That happened to me on a Magpul grip change recently too!

Who screwed the screws!?!

I have two lmt enhanced bolts that are this way. Cam pin will go through either way. I assumed it's for left ejecting ARs but it could bad QC. Fun range day trying to figure out why my mk18 lost its mind and wouldn't ejecting.
