A typical rifle barrel is worn out in 5-10 seconds of use

It's my goal to 'shoot out' a barrel.
OK, not really, but you get my point.

I actually get excited when I shoot a barrel out on one of my bolt guns. I never buy the same brand of barrel twice, always like to try something else. Next barrel will be a Schneider, and maybe with polygonal rifling.
 
Another, and even more depressing, way to look at it is this. If you agree that the cost of a well done barrel replacement is around $800, that means we pay about $8000 per minute of bullet in barrel time. :faint:
 
Yep, heat and friction are the culprits in all "wearing out" of things. Then let's look at drag cars..at 1/4 mile per run, not many miles on the motors before they are toast, i guess....Top Fuel, meh..
Depends, Hayabusa motor turning low. 9s -high 8s can last several seasons with TNT nights thrown is for good measure.
But yes putting maximum strain on anything will cause it to burn up quicker.
