Advice for Ossabaw Hunt

Hey y'all me and a buddy got drawn for the Ossabaw primitive hunt. We've never been. I've read a bunch of different stuff on Facebook groups and etc. Got a general idea of what to expect. I just wanted to hear from people that have had experience there. What's a good place or area to choose/pick to hunt? The only scouting I can do is on OnX so very limited. Besides the videos I watch on YouTube.

One question I do have is should I bring a climber? I've always sat on the ground or spot and stalked (for pigs). But I don't want to be walking around there and ruin someone's hunt.

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks y'all!!!

Been a lot of times. Hunting deer? get in a climber. hunting pigs? stalk and you will see deer too. Been a while since we went but you use to have a designated area until 10am I think. Good luck, it use to be a fun place

Nice yeah going for both. Just trying to put some meat in the freezer.

Went there MANY years ago....at the time
It was hard to get there(charter boat)or take your own
you better take a stand...unless you want to sit on the ground
no water available(baths and such)
deer are small
plan your meals
folks are nice(of course)
I think they will assign your hunting space/area...don't know if you get a choice
like I said....it's been 40+ years.....

Mosquitoe repellent and plenty of it!!! I've been several times and between. no-seeums and skeeters you will be miserable without it

use to be well used trails and all the animals used em. Saw donkeys first time we went and cows

Saw several poisonous snakes and mosquitoes and nats will tote you off if you don’t have some good repellent!

Been numerous times. There is a very nice setup at camp now.
Got showers, power strips for charging electronics, walk in coolers { (I think it’s a 2 animal max) Once you quarter one up you can hang another whole animal up.}
Fires in dedicated fire rings only.
Areas are 100+/- acres each….they’re first come, first serve and are your area exclusively until you sign out of it. Pins on roadside in center of your area, roughly 1/4 mile each direction is your area, common sense and a gps help you to stay within your area on the borders.
Back of most areas are against the coast, a marsh or a creek. Animals move according to tides. Out on marsh on low tide is a good idea….pigs go out and eat clams exposed by the receding water.
October should be close to the peak of the rut down there so you may see some seeking or chasing.
When you arrive, immediately take a camp chair to the check in window at the check station, that will reserve your spot in line. You will select your spot as soon as you are checked in. Chairs are placed in a line from the window in the order of arrival.
Pre hunt meeting will take place after check in, departure and arrival times to/from camp will be discussed and voted on.
You will have a dedicated truck and/or trailer to take you out each hunt. If you want to stay all day you can tell your driver and they will make note of it. If you decide to stay out all day and kill early, you can be back at the road before pickup begins and they’ll take you to camp….otherwise you better hope you have cell phone signal. Keep food secured in hard boxes while at camp. Raccoons are bad about stealing food.
You’ll enjoy your time there. It’s a great hunt.

We took our own boat.
Main advice would be watch for diamondbacks and gators.
Just stay well away from the water. (Story about a ranger here.)
We saw a gator the size of a vw bus.
Killed a diamondback in camp.
Bring a good camera for backup.

The climber isn't necessary, and it will limit what areas you want to hunt. Much of the island is live oak and magnolia trees which aren't great for using a climbing stand, but there are some areas (like the walk-in area) that have large pines that would allow you a great vantage point. I've always taken a small folding chair and made a ground blind out of palmettos after scouting an area. My goal on Ossabaw is to not overpack, but I'm using the charter out of Kilkenny, so space is limited. If I was taking my own boat, I might throw the climber in, just in case.
