AK Fans + Upgrades

AK purists crack me up! I did a “ride along” with OMON in Moscow. All those guys are veterans, and most are former Spetsnatz. They were all using some version of the AK-74, and they had a lot of leeway in how they had them set up.

Every AK I saw in their hands had some sort of RDS and flashlight on it. All had slings and very few ran the military-style sling.

Every single one had an “aftermarket” stock/PG/handguard on it. Stocks with adjustable LOP were the norm. Them boys work in a wide array of temperatures, so it makes sense to have an adjustable stock to make up for variances in clothing layers and body armor.

You know what I didn’t see on a single gun? Wood. Not a wood stock or handguard to be seen. I don’t remember seeing Bakelite either......maybe in some magazines.

American AK owners tend to have a lot of purists in their ranks, while the actual Russians running the guns for a living most definitely are NOT. It’s an interesting dichotomy. I think I trust the real Russkies on this one.

I think you are right. Though, are we purists or just stuck in 1984?

There is something about an SGL21 that is just right....It is a solid state piece of equipment that I can go to work with at any given time...no batteries or knobs to fiddle with....just grab and go. This SGL has an original US Palm grip and I have a CMC AK Elite Trigger that is going in soon...along with a Krebs selector..looking forward to getting it done. I'm kicking around modding this with a mlok or similar rail...I've never been let down by an Arsenal and I've had 1 or 4 to speak of...they are always shooters.

Since the AK guys are here, is there any way to put a Magpul Zhukov on a Mak-90. I know that it will be frowned on, but I just hate the thumbhole stock and love everything else about it.

I have a Zhukov on my square cut MAK90 and love it...don't care what others say it works for me and I like the adjustable length of pull when used in street clothes or with a plate carrier..

How hard was it to fit?

Not hard at all....just a little trimming here and there...for me it's well worth doing if you are actually "training" with the gun. I use that gun as my "truck gun" so I like to keep my software up to date by running it on the regular....on the day this photo was taken I did an hour + long ruck in full plate carrier + back pack with spare mags and ammo in a DOWNPOUR....we ran drills from all shooting positions, vehicle work, etc....I have no complaints about the Magpul stock whatsoever. It's a solid option for a work gun for sure IMHO.

Thought about changing the handguards but I kinda dig the dark wood, we'll see. Really liking the psa brace, a must for a "krink" imo. Unless you sbr, of course. Other than that, the booster is all I need for now.

What adaptor did you use to put the brace on?
