A south American country made a really similar round the 54r also. It would be hard to tell them apart even holding them in your hands.

The Finns built Mosin based target rifles with tighter chambers and bores that were .308-.310 The 53r distinguished the 2 . At the loose end a 53r will shoot 54r ammo . At the tight end it is over pressure
Just wanted to post something to this old thread that I came across. No intent to hijack and the other referrals. Just to help everyone here if you are still having an issue or still have a problem and own the rifle the problem and the fixing failure(s) then you should contact on the net padistributing. He is a complete expert on the repairs for the PSL and the SVD like no other. He’s super nice older guy. Mine was doing the same thing and he fixed it I can even do hand-loads now. He asked do you intend to do hand-loading too? He then reworked the firing pin also. He’s a genius! Hope this helps.
That was an old thread! I was thinking about Dave the other day, he was a very nice guy and a good gunsmith. I think he moved to MI?
