I grew up in W-R.
When I was a kid, on a clear day when we could pick up an Atlanta tv station (the tv antenna age) some news/weather dweb would say Hu-ston (as in Texas) County. It annoyed me to no end.

The original Bremen city in Germany is "brehmen"

That's how I have always pronounced it, for just that reason.
