What's he doing with his money? Surviving with it?

In the show he said he was going to take care of his dad's Mortgage first. Forgot what else..I like that fact that he understood the mental challenge, and the psychology involved, along with the survival skills..He mentioned he was planning a garden for the summer, until they came up with his wife..She is the one that presented him with the check.
