I totally get it, he had religious objections. I just think it's funny that someone that once wrote "Don't want to fight" and claims Conscientious Objector status ends up being one of the baddest asses on the battlefield.

I wouldn't say he wasn't "Brave"
 
Yep, my wife and I visited his home and gravesite years ago. It's a good destination, for the history and the great country. You can see the yellow chairs from his home, way up on the mountain. Lots of history, a great American story.
 
To say the least. Men of his caliber, fortitude and principle are SORELY lacking today. I dare say, they are almost non-existent. But then again, it's a whole new country than the one he lived in.... unfortunately. :(

He was brave enough to take on the U.S. government , then the Germans. He stood up for what he believed in, then fought when he had to. I don't know how much more bravery one man could display.
