ammo box wood stove

If you dig 8 ft down, and then go 30 ft horizontally with 3x3 ft tunnel, it is 50F degrees, year round. This can be done by one man in 2 weeks, discretely disposing of the excavated dirt, with just an etool, if your earth is not too stony, caliche, full of roots. Then some heavy clothing, dry debris, or a sleeping bag will suffice as long as you have adequately shored-up the dirt above you, arranged for a vertical shaft at either end and have lots of dry debris/dirt blocking the ends, keeping out the cold. If I lived in cold country, I would not try to use fuel-heat. The noise of gathering fire wood, the 'sign" left by cutting/hauling it, the smoke in daylight, the light at night, the smell, the leaving of tracks in the snow, will call in your enemies. Instead, ASAP, get south far enough that it doesn't stay frozen during the day. A year after shtf, 99% of the population is going to be DEAD, so you'll be free to occupy the optimal areas. There are places in the Appalachians and the Rockies where you can move less than 50 miles and be 30F degees cooler in daytime, summers, or move the same direction, and be 40F degrees warmer, at night, in winter. There will be no need to suffer bugs, heat, too much or too little rain, or cold/snow. Those things are horrors and they are unnecessary. Given non hybrid seeds, a knowledge of sprouting and root veggies and how to conceal same, you'll be ok.

There was a guy from North Carolina at a gun show awhile back sells them. Kinda expensive but had 855 cans and 50 cans. Looked like a good setup. Can’t remember his name but if you’d rather buy one than do the trial and error thing you could look him up.
