I'm looking to buy an AR15, but basically know Butkus about them.

In 25 words or less, can someone tell me the difference in a $499.00 S&W (or Ruger) and a $1200-1500 Daniel Defense?

I'm not going to argue whether it is "worth it", that's up to you, but:

  • Rail, these run a few hundred dollars
  • CHF barrel
  • "mil-spec" materials, not saying Ruger or S&W don't use these, I honestly don't know
  • presumably better QC (arguable)
  • funky furniture that I can take or leave
  • sometimes included irons depending on model
I'm a DD fan, but think they have gotten too expensive, which I believe in large part has led to their layoffs.

I'm sure that S&W/Ruger have the scale to pump out a gajillion basic entry-level rifles and distribute them everywhere, whereas DD doesn't operate on such a massive scale.
Like albatros43 albatros43 said, it's a nicer rifle, but whether it's worth the extra coin is up to you.
