Another blow to SIG - the XM7?

True this, but history says air superiority trumps it all. The US has been lucky, or blessed, to have it for so long.

Without getting off topic, you're on the money.

We tend to fixate on small arms in conflicts. Which of course are absolutely necessary and part of the equation.

But artillery, tanks, and bombers were what truly pushed troops forward. And remained the case for quite some time in conventional symmetric warfare.

And now with drones it's a different ballgame.

I would think in war continuity of fire trumps everything else the majority of the time. Which is why 556 has dominated the infantry mans load out for so many decades.

Battle rifles have their niche, but it's hard to beat a light weight carbine with as much ammo as can be carried.
If that were true, why not a pistol caliber? How much more 9mm could be carried? Or 30 carbine, or 5.7, or 22lr.
Penetration is also needed. What's the minimum necessary?
And range.
It's all a balance. Just a question of where that balance point is.

5.56 (and similar rounds) is the balance point.

9mm and other pistol calibers are going to struggle beyond 100 yards to accurately and realibly take out a grown man.

30 carbine is simply an outdated predecessor to 5.56.

The question of balance is answered by 5.56mm. Has been for decades and will likely remain so as long as we're using brass, gunpowder and lead.

How many generations of field use and modifications did the M-16 go through before becoming the modern-day weapon? I doubt they will back off on the XM7 but I would bet you will see a lot of revision done.
