I am going to replace my Gas hot water heater and had a question. What do you think about installing a brass garden hose fitting in the copper going outside from the blow off line. Normally it would be capped/plugged but once a year I could install a short length of garden hose to clean out the bottom of the tank rather than run a long hose outside. I think it would be fine but would like opinions.

Blow off is at the top. Drain valve is at the bottom. You won't remove any sediment opening the pressure relief valve

No, I was going to tap in the blow off valve copper pipe near where it goes outside, then run the hose from the drain once a year

I made a short garden hose for a guy doing this exact thing a couple of days ago. I would make sure that the pipe does in fact go outside. I've seen quite a few that just dump into crawl spaces.

Prolly need a check valve to keep it from flowing back towards the W H.

T&P valve would be the check valve, could only go out

Not a plumber and not an inspector but I doubt that would pass code for resale purposes. Theyre going to want the T&P line isolated.

Not a plumber but know enough about water heaters to be dangerous.

Buy the model with an extra anode - doesn't cost that much more but will extend the life of the heater.
