I was looking at barrel options to get my .40 a little cheaper to shoot and I came across conversion barrels for it. Looking at the 5 inch 9mm barrel and was wondering if it is as simple as buying the barrel and mags? Or is there more to it? I heard the 357 sig is a drop in using existing .40 mags, but with the 9mm you'd have to buy mags, and here lies the question. Would there be any issue running 9mm mags in a .40 frame?
Let me know what you think?
Thanks.

From what I recall, on the normal XD40, you have to buy a conversion kit, which come with a lighter spring and barrel. It is not made by Springfield, but by another company. Cant think of the name... something beaver? Then you swap out and use the XD9 mags on it.

Anywho, I'm not sure about the XDm though...... You might want to check on XDtalk forum for that information.

In most pistols the 357 sig & 40 S&W can be converted with a barrel swap as they have the same case dimensions at the rear and the same length. 10mm generally can be converted down to .40 with a barrel as it's the same case but slightly longer with a large primer instead of small (cant got 10 to 40, as mag wells are too short for the longer round. But all 3 of these rounds are the same profile where they meet the slide. I've never heard of any of them being converted down to a 9mm without a slide change, as the smaller 9mm isn't going to be under the extractor designed for the larger casing. That being said I don't know about the Springfields in particular.

Glock 23 and 27 as well as an M&P .40 and M&P 40c can be converted down to a 9mm and all you do is a barrel swap. Nothing else needed.

Not sure about Springfield.

Lol, though I do remember accidentally mixing a 9 into a 40 mag about 10 years ago, and it did go bang....

Thanks for your comments fellas, good and bad. I'm going to buy the 9mm "conversion" barrel that Brownells sells and give it a try. My main question was on the mags. Not knowing Springfield, and hearing of "small and large frame" pistols, I was hoping that with the vast knowledge available on ODT, that someone would know for sure. Oh well, guess in a couple of weeks, I'll know. Troy brings up a good point, I wonder if the extractor will even reach a 9mm case?
