Like the title says, have any of you actually used your weapon in a civilian SD situation? If so, how long did the police keep your weapon. if you got it back at all? I ask because I EDC a Dan Wesson Guardian .45. It is truly a spectacular gun and I do not regret spending the money on it one bit. I have put a little over 500 problem free rounds through it, about 100 of which were various SD rounds. If I do my part it is capable of shooting quarters at 20 yards every time. I would trust it with not only my life but the lives of my wife an unborn child.

That being said, it is a $1500 gun on my hip everyday. I'm not so much worried about banging it up as I am never getting it back if I ever had to use it in a SD situation. Yes, I know getting it back should be the least of my concerns as I would be alive and have many potential thousands of dollars worth of legal fees to worry about. I am, however, on a budget and had to save for a long time to finally get it.

I had an idea this morning that while logical is also not very appealing. Sell the Guardian, buy a plastic fantastic M&P 45, and save up for a Dan Wesson Specialist for HD. I wouldn't care about losing or banging up the M&P. I shot one today and while no plastic pistol has ever swayed me from QUALITY 1911s, it wasn't as terrible as I had imagined. The Specialist is just a gun that causes movement every time I see it.

I guess the real question is, am I crazy for being worried about losing my Guardian in an SD situation? Would it be prudent to just get a "beater" edc weapon and save the good stuff for the house? Should I just say screw it all and buy $500 worth of tacos?

*****THIS IS NOT A DISS ON ANY POLYMER GUNS!!!!****

$500 in tacos  but seriously if you can afford it go and find you something for work so to speak, you have one for "fun" now get one to have everyday like an m&p 45

Zimmerman got his gun back after trial. You may have to get a lawyer's advice to be sure but if you are within your rights there is no reason for them to keep it forever. That being said get a weapon you don't mind lending to the police for a while because you don't want any hesitation when needing to defend yourself.

Really? Really? Get a plastic fantastic to EDC and get a nice frame for your DW and hang it on a wall. A firearm, be it a highpoint or a high dollar is a tool. If you are afraid to use that tool because you might lose it then it is just a wall hanging and you should not carry (use) it. On the other hand if you are in a SD situation what do you want? A EDC that might go bang or your most trusted to save your life weapon. I would carry the DW and never look back.

Gee should I carry a piece of crap plastic gun or continue with the awesomeness of a Dan Wesson Specialist? Dude, I own a DW Specialist and it is a damn fine weapon. I EDC an STI RANGERII I just cannot bring myself to buy/carry a plastic pistol.
Nothing against those who do, different strokes for different folks.
Chances are you will never have to use you EDC in a defense situation. However onb the off chance the situation arises, do you want a gun that is meh OK, or your Wesson that is spot on dead nuts accurate?

I'm saying if it causes him to hesitate that ain't good. He wants a weapon that he can use in a self defense situation without second thought. If that's the dan Wesson, great but the fact that he is concerned about losing it might cause a moment of hesitation.

You never want to have to second guess your decision!! After the trigger is pulled, there's no bringing it back..If you only feel confident with that weapon, it's a no brainer. What is your life and your loved ones life worth? Until you become confident with a less expensive weapon, carry it!
