They are law enforcement. You are now involved in an event . That firearm is also involved in that event . Me using a stolen firearm would change the scenario a lot and they would then have to enforce the law by locking me up for possession of a stolen firearm .
I don’t see the big deal. It’s just a serial number . The ATF has plenty of those on me already. I was more concerned about his handling of it . Don’t drop my stuff.
I understand its no big deal to you and you didn't mind letting them run the serial number, there is nothing wrong with that. I would have probably told him dont get my gun dirty or scratch it too. I just don't think anyone has any business checking the serial number on your guns unless you use it to commit a crime. I would also like to know whether he could legally take your gun and run the serial number if you had said no? I feel like our rights get trampled on far too often, thats the only reason i am against "just checking serial numbers" or just "seeing your ID." For all i know, they may have the right to disarm you and run your serial number, hopefully someone will chime in and answer where i don't have to google it.
