Seems pretty simple.

I'll be shipping a handgun for the first time and next day air rates are CRAZY expensive.

Take the sealed box (ready to ship) and see if your local dealer will ship it for you with their contracted rates. It will be more expensive, of course, if the receiving FFL will only accept the firearm from another FFL.

ETA: most of the time big dealers will have scheduled pickups... it beats waiting in line by a long shot.
