My kids are getting into keeping reptiles and looking to see what other people have in their collection. I get it, they aren't for everyone, but we enjoy keeping the few that we have. What do you have and what's on the list?

I have a Kenyan sand boa. One of the most docile snakes that doesn’t get above 1.5’-2’ long. They burrow under a substrate and you usually only see the head sticking through.
You can get different colored morphs. I have a orange and black female.
Eats frozen mice. Set up is simple with a 10 gal tank, infrared heat lamp, heating pad water bowl and fine aspen shavings. She’ll let you hold her no problems and if you’re wearing a hoodie she’ll hang out in the front pocket.

That's actually one that we are looking at in the near future, they are pretty neat. Kinda torn between those and rosy boas.

Rosy boas are another good starter snake. I believe they’re taken care of in the same way a sand boa is.
Another good snake to own is a Hognose snake. They’re a little more active though.
I will say that I didn’t find out that these boas can live up to 20 years until after I got one lol.

I'm not opposed to active snakes. We've got a pied ball python and a bearded dragon so something that moves a little isn't a bad thing. My only concern with the western hognose is the fact that they are rear fang venomous and not sure how I feel about that around my kids no matter how mild the venom is.

If that’s the case then you’re headed in a better direction with the rosy. I’d like an update to know what you decided on.

I'm not opposed to both. We're just getting into it the last year or so, but it's definitely an addictive hobby. Really wanting a Dumerils or a Boa Imperator, but not 100% wanting to get into something that big quite yet.
