Does anyone know how to, have experience with or works for an Alarm System company? We want to be able to reprogram it and self monitor.

Background: We're buying a home that has a nice ADT system installed but I really don't want to pay the $30+ a month for monitoring service that really isn't worth it and ADT has a not so great customer service reputation. I've looked into some o the more reasonably priced monitoring services for $9, etc., however all we really need is the ability to monitor it ourselves: arm it at night, when we leave the house, etc. to scare away any intruders prior to them meeting the end of one of many self defense options. :D Thanks!

Find someone who knows what they are doing. Often companies such as ADT design their systems in such a fashion that its difficult for other companies to set up monitoring once you give ADT the boot. ( at least that's been the case in some large scale retail and ware house installations I've been involved in ) Don't be surprised if their is a need to change out your control panel.

We have Ackerman security, though I don't really like having to pay $32 a month for monitoring it is well worth it. We had a alarm one day (by accident) and within 5 mins we had Hampton PD standing at our door. Now they do call you first before sending the law enforcement, but if you don't answer any of the phone numbers you give them, then they alert the LE. And for us it works out great, because my wife and kids are home by themselves at night, while I'm at work. The security alarm is just the front line of defense, never relay on it alone, always have your other.... defenses at the ready. I'm currently teaching my wife and kids self defense...
