I also try to use the ejection port cover caliber and I also use the caliber sticker on all my mags just so I don't go trying to jam a 6.8 in a 5.56. I use muted colors so you can see them but they don't stick out like like a porno co**.

If you get confused with your ammo and load a hollow point blackout round in your 556 upper you will blow it up in your hand if you pull the trigger.

Well, damn. I never thought of that. I had to look it up to be sure. Yep. The .300's neck is so far back that it would be positioned in the wide portion of the .223's chamber, made for the case's main body behind the neck.
The bullet can be jammed up against the too-small bore and slide back a little in its case to create "headspace" that's sufficient to put the primer in the right place to get hit by the firing pin.
