AR in 22

I'm wanting to make a AR pistol in 22. I have a 12.5 inch barrel in 223. I know they sell conversion kits for a standard AR to run 22 in it. Would I be better off buying a 22 barrel? Do they make a dedicated lower or is it different mags that are used on the standard lower?

I did mine with a 22 dedicated barrel and a smith and Wesson mag well for a basic ar lower so that I can use smith and Wesson mags and not black dog mags. 22lr and 223 have different twist rates for accuracy so a 22lr barrel seems it is best. I haven’t seen any dedicated lowers for 22lr. They are super fun! Good luck

I haven't seen any dedicated lowers either, but there are a lot of things that I've never seen.

apparently the black dog mags are great but since I have a 15/22 and plenty of their mags I wanted to have them share the mags.

Get a dedicated barrel. The twist rate on a 223/556 is far too fast for 22. The lowers are the same. Black dog mags are indeed great.

If you get the dedicated barrel you will also need the dedicated bolt/bolt carrier, which is different than the adapter kits.

I bought a slick side upper since there is no provision for a forward assist on the bolt.

I went with the dedicated .22 uppers from PSA, they fit on any milspec lower. Black dog mags are awesome too

I also went with a PSA dedicated upper and a handful of their Black Dog mags.
Been a lot of fun and great reliability once I got the mag followers loosened up.
