The Sig Brace will continue to be an ongoing saga. The ATF has ruled that shouldering it makes it into a rifle. In essence, they have opened up a very large can of worms. This has the potential to end in our favor, as it will inevitably go to court and could include more than just the sig brace. There is already a major court case challenging the NFA, so this will get interesting.

I would start with a 16" rifle/carbine. It will give you an opportunity to explore the platform without getting in too deep.
It's what I did. Now that I have multiple lowers, multiple SBRs, uppers in four calibers with barrel lengths from 7" to 20" - I will not hesitate to suggest a very standard 5.56 16" carbine upper to get you started.

A 16 inch carbine may be the most practical unless you go the SBR route.
I'm a big fan of BCM but that's just me. I'm not going to get into any brand wars right now.
One thing with the pinned 14.5" upper - to me it's not all that worth it. You're still locked into the same OAL as a 16" without the easy ability to switch and customize your setup to your liking. Also, you get higher velocity out of the 16". The 14.5 is only if you have to get as close as possible to the government M4 setup - and I would SBR if I just had to go down that route.
That's the only thing I don't like about it. I'm sure it will be my go-to AR once I get my trust together and e-file for the SBR.
If you want to go the 16 inch route I'd get a mid length. Carbine was designed for 14.5" specifically. When using a carbine gas block with a 16" barrel you are wearing your rifle out faster. The rule of thumb is:
10.5 and less = Pistol
10.5 - 14.7 = Carbine
16 - 18 = mid length
18+ = Rifle
The only reason 16" carbines exist is because the legal reasons behind it.

16" carbine length can be made to work more smoothly (less wear) with heavier buffers, springs, or adjustable gas blocks.
I agree with red fox though that mid length seems to work better on 16-18" barrels.

I am soooooooo glad I went ahead with my SBR paperwork. This Sig brace issue was bound to be addressed after so many people were openly (internet) flaunting the fact that it was a loophole and shouldering the brace. We all knew it a loophole but some people just can't leave well enough alone.
