Asking for GDL and/or GCCP

Why are so many people asking for ID lately? If I must show my I’d I might as well buy from a dealer.
On here I will not show my I’d and many things I would love to buy, I pass on as the seller requires my ID. I actually would prefer their phone number and not even get into a pm on a purchase.
If it’s not required by law, what is the purpose?
Sorry, don’t mean to vent, but it seems to be a growing trend lately and I am just refusing to do it.

Actually catrigged refers to a type of sail boat, I owned one and sailed it a lot when I lived on St. Simons Island.
