I would not kill them and waste them if they were not fit to eat this time of the year. You can eat them and yes, I have done so. The larvae are in the skin, not the meat.

They are actually Bot Fly larvae and are quite harmless to the squirrel and you. I’ve killed deer before and saw bot fly larvae crawl out of the deer’s nose once the deer’s body temperature cooled.
