First of all I am new to the site and if we never give "newbies" a chance then they are gonna leave the site!
I also have a rhode island cell phone # and I know it may seem shady but it's more of hassle for me to change it so i kept it.

I never said I wouldn't give a newbie a chance (heck I'm sorta a newbie) that has an out of state cell number, sorry you misunderstood. These guys that I am referring to could NOT produce a Valid GA ID, not even a light bill with their name and GA address on it,there fore could not prove their residency.As far as I am concerned, a valid ID with an "unopened" sealed utility bill (govt document) (US Postal Service on it) with their name and address on it would do for me.

I understand completely as I am not the most trusting person. I pride myself on y ability to size someone up and get a feel from them in a short conversation. I don't ever have a prob providing my I'd or any proof I am legal to win a firearm, perhaps why I have great luck meeting some awesome people on this site

99% of the members on this site are honest, legit guys who just like collecting guns as a hobby. The other 1% could ruin it for everyone if we aren't on our guard. Do you really think that fast & furious was the only scheme the ATF had going to push for tighter gun laws?

i deal with members with feedback

if they dont have any i gotta feel like they know what they are talking about and/or have some kind of proof backing up their claims (like giving quick and easy answers when asked, no tip toeing around an issue)

So far I have only dealt with members with feedback and nothing even remotely shady.

I hope these people that are posting ads with no pics and vague descriptions are just newbs that don't know any better. Never the less, vague descriptions and no pics are an immediate turn-off for me.

I know people think that I'm paranoid for saying this but I almost guarantee that, with the volume of firearms that are moved daily on this forum between members, there are ATF agents actively monitoring it. I don't necessarily think that they would try to trick you into doing something illegal but if you do accidentally out of ignorance your but could be in a sling for a very long time. It's better to be too cautious than not enough. You have to ask for a drivers license to make sure that they are a resident but definitely it's better safe than sorry to only deal with people that have a carry permit. If you're only dealing with permit holders the state/feds can't say that you shouldn't have dealt with them. If the feds accept the state permit as valid proof that the buyer isn't a criminal and doesn't need a background check in georgia then it should be enough for you.

I hope that everyone is doing this anyway and that this is a useless thread but I am going to bring it up anyway just to make sure we are all on top of our game...

First of all I would like to say that I have never met any shady characters on the ODT and everyone that I have dealt with has been very upfront and honest. However lately I have been seeing some ads in the S&S boards that have made me a little suspicious. For example- people listing guns with no pictures for exactly what they sell for new, people listing guns simply as "9mm pistol" without giving any model number or additional info, people specifically stating "no paperwork required" etc... 9 times out of 10 it is a new member with zero feedback and the only post they have made is the one where they list their gun for sale. Now it could very well be that these are simply new members that don't know any better and I certainly don't want to run them off however it could also be people trying to lure us into making deals that can really bite us in the ass later on. Maybe I am just being paranoid but lets face it, if you were a criminal trying to get rid of a stolen gun, your best option would be to list it on an online trading site like this one. Also, it could very well be an undercover ATF agent trying to make a series of shady deals so that they can get sites like this shut down. I know that the latter has happened on glocktalk and ar-15.com so it would be foolish to assume that our Federal friends are not on here as well. So just as a reminder, lets all be extra careful about dotting our i's and crossing our t's on every deal we do. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you get any kind of shady vibe, its easier to walk away than to deal with the consequences later. I know we have differing opinions about bills of sale but ALWAYS ask to see an ID when you make a deal and NEVER sell to anyone who refuses to show one. (personally, I won't deal with anyone who does not have a Georgia Weapons License but that is not required so it is up to you) PAY ATTENTION to what people say and how they say it. If someone ever hints at the fact that they might not be able to purchase a firearm from a dealer, RUN! This is a favorite tactic of the ATF to bait you into selling a gun to someone who supposedly cannot legally own a weapon.

Again, maybe I am just being paranoid but I think that this needs to be brought up. The ODT has been very good to us all but remember that there are a lot of people in this country that do not agree with our hobby and would love to see sites like this shut down. It is our responsibility to police ourselves and to keep everything that goes on here legitimate. Keep your eyes open, and always use your better judgement. Lets keep the criminals and the ATF out of our business so we can all continue to enjoy our rights as American citizens.

Just kinda wondering, Does anyone have knowledge of someone making a mistake and getting busted? I hope not and wondering, we would even find out? Everyone watch out. I have had some shady folks try and buy at shows and sent them on their way.

I don't think we need to be in a panic over this. Yes, you should ask if the person is able to legally own a firearm and ask if they are a GA resident. Perhaps ask to see a GA driver's license but that's not necessary. If there is an ATF sting or even a gun control reporter looking for wrong doing, they'll be looking for someone really breaking the law. In the "sting" videos and reports that I've seen, the sales were blatantly illegal. The agent would confess that they're glad they don't have to sign anything because they're a felon, or they would state that they are from another state. Maybe they aren't all so obvious but just asking those two questions would seem to cover any transaction.

Be smart but don't let fear make you volunteer to do what gun control advocates would love to mandate.

As a "responsible" gun owner, I'm going to go by the rules because it's the right thing to do. On a side note.......all boards would slowley die off without newbies.
