I was at the cumming antique show today. I came across this Oct 1967 issue of LIFE magazine.

The cool part of this story is I know the man on the cover. One of my best friends dad. U.S. Marine Cruz Acuna. No longer with us past away about 12 years ago. He was a great guy I was around him from the time I was about 7 to 18 until his death. He didn't even know he was in a magazine let alone on the cover of the most popular magazine of the time until about 8 months after he got back state side. He was in a barber shop waiting his turn and saw himself laying on the table. What a way to find out you mad the cover of LIFE!.

Anyway I am very happy to own it and am going to build a shadow box I think and hang it in the gun room. Best $10 bucks I may have ever spent.

Edit: Pretty sure this is the first time I have actually held a copy. The copy at his house was always kind of sacred and even as a young kid I knew better then to risk holding it.

AWESOME!

That's really cool. Did you recognize him immediately and did you know this existed beforehand?

Yeah I had seen it at their house growing up it would get pulled out every now and then. Cruz never talked about the war it took him a good while to recover from it. So the only thing he talked about was how he found out he was on the cover. And he only said war was an ugly thing.
