I’d have to agree. The damn bugs south of the gnat line are about as bad as the heat too! You can take your time in the hills, no avoiding the heat and bugs in Fargo in the swamp!
Worst place I ever worked was Mattamuskeet, NC. The green flies were so thick, you’d catch one or two every time you closed your compass. Bonifay, FL was pretty rough too I remember.

I believe it. I’ve never cruised in the Carolina’s but done my fair share around I-10 in North Florida and you ain’t kiddin. I can remember using that 100% deet like hand lotion and the skeeters down there just laughin at it 😂. Head net is an absolute requirement down there.

Hard to beat South Florida for bugs… when I was a kid, my dad and I tried to fish the canal along US27 near the Everglades and west of Ft Lauderdale on an overcast, drizzly afternoon…. we only lasted outside the car about five minutes…. mosquitoes were so thick they were flying in your ears and up your nose…. I’d cast a lure and only get one or two turns of the reel before having to use my hand to chase the mosquitoes off my face and head…. We put our rods back in the trunk and jumped in the car…. then spent the next 20+ minutes killing the mosquitoes that had followed us into the car….

Same goes for the “love bugs” that seemed to suddenly appear from nowhere in the early 70s around north/central Florida…. they were so thick in May that you could barely see out of the windshield after 5-10 miles on the Interstate….
