Been lookin' for a truck, but.....

A few months back I picked up a 1999 Grand Cherokee Laredo (WJ) from @yodizan with 116k miles. I don't plan on hauling heavy loads; primarily trips to Home Depot, motorcycles, 4 wheeler, small camper, etc. so I just gave up on the search for a truck since everyone wants top dollar for their garbage wagons anyways. Figure why pay for an extra vehicle, insurance and maintenance when I already have one plenty capable for our use, and it's 4wd. Since I picked it up, I added a few things just to bring it up to date a bit, but thanks to @yodizan, the interior is a time capsule.

Added/replaced the following:
  • Tailgate lift struts
  • Tailgate glass lift struts
  • Hood lift struts
  • Passenger mirror
  • Android plug and play stereo
  • Tweeters
  • Drilled rotors
  • Brakes
  • Emergency brake shoes
  • Front passenger lock actuator
  • Rear driver lock actuator
  • Water Pump
  • Serpentine belt
  • Idler pulley
  • Thermostat
  • Transfer case switch
  • Rough Country 2" lift
  • Tow hitch receiver
  • Trailer wiring harness
  • Rain guards
  • Headlights
  • Tail lights
  • Restored exterior trim
  • Added cargo basket
  • Fresh oil
  • Fresh coolant
That being said, none of this needed to be done other than the transfer case switch and brakes, I've just been tinkering with it the last few months and addressed little things that come with an aging vehicle. Personally, I don't think this thing looks like a 23 year old vehicle.

Here's the ol' rig in all her glory

Well done

Thank you. I think a lot of people project their ego based on what they drive but that often comes at a huge price. I'm getting older and don't feel the need to have a $600 payment for something that will be used very seldom. That money staying in my pocket can go ahead and gain interest.
We are in the same boat

1997 F-150, looks a little rough, but in A-1 mechanical condition.

In the last 4 years, I've spent about $4K in professional maintenance. A lot of people wouldn't do that for a $3500 truck.

Rebuilt the front end with upgraded, lifetime parts. replaced the 4WD electronic control, just finished having the rearend with posi completely rebuilt with all new parts.

Including the value of the truck, and the cost of repairs, I could get another truck of similar vintage (maybe) with unknown history that could need similar repairs right away. Now I have a truck that I can drive to Calif. if I wanted to.

At this stage of life. I don't need to impress anyone, and I certainly don't need monthly payments.

There is something special about fixing up an older vehicle and keeping it going, but you may want to grab some extra maintenance & repair parts sooner than later because the supply chain is going to be out of whack for the foreseeable future.

I began buying what I believed I would eventually need for my 2002 and 2007 Toyota trucks before the plandemic, and I continued buying through most of 2021. Today's prices are much higher than what I paid for these same items not long ago, and some of the hard parts are increasingly difficult to find.

It's kind of like ammo, buy it cheap... stack it deep.
Parts for your Toyota trucks? Is that a joke? Jk. What did you stock up on?

God I want that burb. What a badass truck!
This one is a pretty decent deal considering. Yep, it is a badass.
I had a 1989 baby blue 3/4 ton with 454ci …..blacked out windows, barn doors !
I loved that thing but had to have some cash at the time for emergency. :(
But i loved that one better than the 1995 - would love either one back ! Lol.

You made that cherokee look great. I love all kinds of jeeps . I'm reluctantly going to sell my 99 wrangler . It has a 4" lift and 5 spd . After my hip surgery I hurts to climb into it. I miss my 03 ram and my 2014 taco.

Yep, that's where I'm at. I'd rather just have something reliable and keep my pockets lined.

I'm sorry to hear that. That's kind of why I only went with a small lift. I don't want to have to jump or crouch to get in it and wanted a little trail clearance for camping.
