Bermuda grass questions

For you guys with weed control issues, are you using pre-emergent and bagging your grass? Other than that, you just gotta get out there and pull the weeds you do have and the pre-emergent will keep any from sprouting. Treat with weed-n-feed liquid if you dont like pulling weeds.

I don't have inground sprinklers, so I spend about an hour each morning hand watering each yard. That's why the yard gets watered every other day. As for the lime, it looks like Pennington has some at home depot. Good enough? Do I add it to the regular fertilizer or do I just put it down by itself?

Good enough. Just put it down by itself

Wow, lots of conflicting advice. Talk to the county extension agent or google bermuda care and look for UGA or Auburn recommendations.

Be very careful using Roundup in the winter. The top of the grass may be brown, but that doesn't mean the roots are dormant. If they're not, you'll kill it. You could spray after a really cold snap, but the weeds would likely be dead by that point anyway. Best bet is to use pre-emergents.

What's your advice? I have heard to water more, raise the mower, and lime.
I believe you can absolutely overwater your lawn... If I was you, I'd consult a lawncare professional to remedy your problem. Last year, my Bermuda was browning up and my lawncare professional told me to cut way back on the watering... I did and the lawn recovered beautifully.

You are overwatering. Deep infrequent water is what turf needs. 1 inch per week.
If you keep the top of the ground moist by watering all the time the roots will be shallow. That's not what you want. Watering deeply = deep roots. Don't water at night also. It's like wearing wet socks to bed. H2O sits on leaves all night = fungus.
Water in early am when wind is low and leaves will be dry by mid morning to lunch time. Also, **** happens. Everyone gets fungus. Ask any golf course superintendent. Bermuda is a high maintenance turf. PM me if needed. I sell Lesco fert, pre-m, fungicides wholesale.

As far as i know the crab grass will dye off during winter, but you need to put down the crabgrass preventer in the spring. I would not spray it with weed killer as it will leave a giant dead spot, I would pull some of the stuff out of the ground. Little by little. I think you're probably better off waiting till early spring. Besides the crabgrass, the bermuda looks healthy!

Correct!!! Crab grass is an annual and returns from seed each spring. There are winter weeds and summer weeds
Most effective control is to put down pre-emergent (doesn't allow any seed to germinate) Bermuda is a perennial so it comes back from the roots and is not effected. I use a pre-emergent called snapshot. Expensive but effective and a bag goes a long way. some of them work for 1 month others work for 3 months

If you are going to over-seed the lawn, pre-emergent will not allow your grass seed to germinate.

Timing is everything with pre-emergent. Put it out early in the morning while the dew is still on the ground. Probably late Feb or early march before the crab grass comes up.

Killing crab grass after it is sprouted is very hard to killand "weed and feed" is expensive. You're much more likely to burn your grass than kill the crab grass

Spraying dormant bermuda will kill it and do nothing to the crabgrass seed waiting to germinate in the spring!

yes!

Weed and feed didn't do **** in my back yard. I'm going to attack that crab grass next year. I sprayed round up all over one patch. Killed some if it. :(
